grad/prom makeup

It is that time of year! Graduating from high school is a huge milestone…which means celebrating…which means party worthy makeup! Today I’m going to show you a dramatic eye look that’s perfect for graduation/prom. So let’s get started! First, I’d like to introduce you to my gorgeous cousin who is graduating this year.

For her upcoming grad I created an eye look that was fun and glamorous. She wanted to play up her eyes so we agreed to go with a gold and black colour scheme to make her peepers pop.

  1. Start with an eyeshadow primer. This makeup needs to last all night!
  2. Then blend a warm, matte brown just above the crease using windshield wiper motions. This swipe of colour above the crease serves as a gradient colour so that the darker colours on the outer V will appear to blend out smoothly.
  3. Use a matte black eyeshadow to shape out the outer V. Use a light hand and slowly build up the colour. Make sure you blend, blend, blend before you add more colour. We do want the eye makeup to be strong but we don’t want to look like we have a black eye. NOTE: Leave the middle of the lid and the inner corner bare!
  4. Go back into the crease with a very small amount of the matte brown shade and blend like crazy!
  5. Use a gold, shimmery shadow all across the lid (where you left it bare). Keep the shimmery colour solely on the lid. Do not bring it up into the crease. We want to keep the crease and the outer V as matte as possible.
  6. Highlight the inner corner of the eye with a shimmery, iridescent, white or pale gold eyeshadow.
  7. Line the upper lashline with black liquid liner. I flicked the liner out just slightly.
  8. Line the outer 2/3 of the bottom lashline with the matte black eyeshadow. Keep the shadow as tight the lashline as possible.
  9. Use a small, fluffy brush and the matte brown eyeshadow and blend out the black shadow on the lower lashline.
  10. Coat the upper and lower lashes with two coats of black mascara.
  11. OPTIONAL: Pat some gold glitter on top of the gold, shimmery eyeshadow for some extra glam.
  12. OPTIONAL: Add some false lashes to the upper lashline to up the drama.

Here are a few more pics of the final eye look. I did not add false lashes yet as this was just a run-through. But we will be putting some on for the actual graduation day.

I hope you liked this eye look! I will be doing an in-depth post on skin perfecting and face makeup for photos soon!

this one’s for the boys

With Valentine’s day coming up the beautysphere is abuzz with pink eyeshadow, pink lipstick, pink blush, pink, pink, pink. I absolutely LOVE this type of makeup! However the male species doesn’t always appreciate the art and effort that goes into a Valentine’s inspired makeup look. So for this Valentine’s day rock some boy friendly makeup.

This is a look I would rock on a first date and every date after that.

This look is all about subtly enhancing your features.
Shimmery pink and shimmery brown shadows enhance my hazel eye colour.
I then used a black liquid eyeliner to make my eyes appear wider and to darken my lash line.
No statement brows here!
I went for natural looking skin and slightly flushed cheeks (no contouring!)
I used a “mylipsbutbetter” sheer lip gloss, but a lip balm would be a great choice if you’re hoping for a romantic kiss!

Here is my version of a boy friendly eye look up close:

Here are some simple take-away rules to create your own “boy friendly” look:

Rule #1: Boy friendly makeup should be viewed as amped up natural beauty. Subtly emphasize your eyes and lips. A dude will never notice your flawless highlight and contour. They will notice how pretty your eyes look and how luscious your lips are.

Rule #2: Don’t put up any obstacles. While the male species is oblivious to the art of makeup, they are highly sensitive to “obvious makeup”. Red lips, fake eyelashes, sparkles, (basically all the things I love) are all viewed as obstacles by a dude. The truth is they might not want to get to close to you if they are afraid of being covered in red lipstick and sparkles.

For those who want to know here’s a
list of all the products I used:
Arbonne Makeup Primer (review coming soon!)
Clinique Stay Matte Oil Free Makeup
Benefit Fake Up Concealer
Cover FX Pressed Mineral Foundation
Tarte Amazonian Clay Bronzer in Park Avenue Princess

Nars Smudge Proof Eyeshadow Base

Valentine’s Day Inspired Look

Hi everyone! Valentine’s day is just around the corner. Some people call it a Hallmark Holiday while others take it as an opportunity to profess their undying love. Whether you celebrate it or not, the colours associated with Valentine’s day definitely make for a pretty #fotd.

For this look I went for a pink and purple eye look, fresh dewy skin and pretty pink lips.

Don’t mind the hair, I’ll make more of an effort when I actually have to leave the house.

1. Start with clean, well moisturized skin. Use a moisturize with SPF! See my current favourite here.
2. I applied Clinique Stay Matte foundation in 02 Alabaster with my favourite foundation brush.
3. Mix Elf Studio HD Blush in Headliner with Elf Shimmering Facial Whip in Pink Lemonade on the back of your hand. Apply to the tops of the apples of your cheeks and blend out with a duo fibre brush.
4. Powder is optional, if you have oily skin like me you’ll need a powder even if you’re going for a fresh, dewy look. For those with dry skin you can either use a translucent powder or a setting spray. I used Cover FX Pressed Mineral Foundation in G40 (formerly M40)

2014-02-04 15.01Eyes:
1. Prime the eyes with MAC Paint Pot in Bare Study
2. Sweep the light pink shade from Loreal Paris HIP Metallic Shadow Duo all across the lids. I extended mine slightly to create a V shape on the outer lid.
3. Line the upper lash line with a soft brown pencil liner.
4. Smudge out the brown liner with a smudge brush and the dark purple shadow from the Loreal eyeshadow duo.
5. Line the upper waterline with the same brown pencil
6. Curl eyelashes and apply lots of black mascara.

2014-02-04 15.03

1. I prepped my lips with Aquaphor Healing Ointment
2. I lightly lined my lips with a nude lip liner and then blended the line in with my finger.
3. Lastly I lightly applied Too Faced lipstick in Marshmallow Bunny and blended that in with my fingers as well to achieve a very natural looking lip.
