grad/prom makeup

It is that time of year! Graduating from high school is a huge milestone…which means celebrating…which means party worthy makeup! Today I’m going to show you a dramatic eye look that’s perfect for graduation/prom. So let’s get started! First, I’d like to introduce you to my gorgeous cousin who is graduating this year.

For her upcoming grad I created an eye look that was fun and glamorous. She wanted to play up her eyes so we agreed to go with a gold and black colour scheme to make her peepers pop.

  1. Start with an eyeshadow primer. This makeup needs to last all night!
  2. Then blend a warm, matte brown just above the crease using windshield wiper motions. This swipe of colour above the crease serves as a gradient colour so that the darker colours on the outer V will appear to blend out smoothly.
  3. Use a matte black eyeshadow to shape out the outer V. Use a light hand and slowly build up the colour. Make sure you blend, blend, blend before you add more colour. We do want the eye makeup to be strong but we don’t want to look like we have a black eye. NOTE: Leave the middle of the lid and the inner corner bare!
  4. Go back into the crease with a very small amount of the matte brown shade and blend like crazy!
  5. Use a gold, shimmery shadow all across the lid (where you left it bare). Keep the shimmery colour solely on the lid. Do not bring it up into the crease. We want to keep the crease and the outer V as matte as possible.
  6. Highlight the inner corner of the eye with a shimmery, iridescent, white or pale gold eyeshadow.
  7. Line the upper lashline with black liquid liner. I flicked the liner out just slightly.
  8. Line the outer 2/3 of the bottom lashline with the matte black eyeshadow. Keep the shadow as tight the lashline as possible.
  9. Use a small, fluffy brush and the matte brown eyeshadow and blend out the black shadow on the lower lashline.
  10. Coat the upper and lower lashes with two coats of black mascara.
  11. OPTIONAL: Pat some gold glitter on top of the gold, shimmery eyeshadow for some extra glam.
  12. OPTIONAL: Add some false lashes to the upper lashline to up the drama.

Here are a few more pics of the final eye look. I did not add false lashes yet as this was just a run-through. But we will be putting some on for the actual graduation day.

joe fresh liquid lipstick in baie savauge

Joe Fresh (the clothing/accessories/makeup line from Superstore) has recently released a line of liquid lipsticks for their spring/summer collection. Here’s to you Joe Fresh, you totally nailed it!

I picked up two shades Grapefruit and Baie Savauge…obviously I want to talk about Baie Savauge. This colour! Please appreciate it for a few minutes…
12224293536_6604989c5b_zI have been searching high and low for “Radiant Orchid” products, i.e. Pantone Colour of the Year for 2014. On Sephora’s website they have pages of suggestions. However, what about us poor people who don’t want to spend $32 on a lipstick that will no longer be “the colour of the year” come 2015? Enter Joe Fresh liquid lipstick in Baie Savauge. The punchier, more vibrant, budget friendly, Radiant Orchid lipstick.

Apart from the amazing colour, this product has an excellent formulation. It goes on creamy and smooth, sets to a semi-matte finish, and wears beautifully for 5+ hours. What more can you ask for in an $8 drugstore lipstick?

As you can see from the swatch, this stuff has amaze-tastic pigmentation.

You only need the tiniest amount to give yourself covetable colour. For those that don’t want a full on power pout, apply and blot! You will be left with the most beautiful orchid stained lips. This liquid lipstick also makes a beautiful cheek stain. But be careful when you apply! Through my rigorous experimentation I have decided the best way to apply this product as a cheek stain is to dot some on the back of your hand and then pick up a tiny amount on a small duo fibre brush like this one. Blot the brush once or twice to remove excess product and then blend whats left onto the apples of your cheeks. Then admire your fresh flush in the mirror. As a cheek stain this product looks very similar to Benefits Lolitint. You are welcome!

As a bonus, the blue undertones of this colour will also create a whitening effect on your teeth! It just keeps getting better! and I just can’t get enough!

What are your “Radiant Orchid” beauty product picks? Please leave a comment so we can talk beauty!

navy baby

I have a quick post today on a the makeup that I wore for my birthday a few days ago. I went for a dramatic eye look featuring a beautiful shimmering blue shadow that I am in LOVE with!

DSC00345DSC00344

This look is very simple to do and if you want to find out how I did it keep reading!

I used two different palettes to achieve this look the Tarte NeutralEYES Natural Eyes Palette and the Sleek Makeup i-Divine in Oh So Special.

tarte_neutraleyes002

  1. I started with an eye primer.
  2. I used the matte navy eyeshadow from the Tarte palette to line the upper lash line and create a slightly winged shape at the outer corner. I then blended this until I was happy with how it looked.
  3. I used a matte mauve shade from the Sleek palette (bottom row, second in from the right side) and blended into my crease.
  4. I blended the two matte shades (mauve and blue) together until it looked seamless.
  5. I patted a shimmery navy blue from the Sleek palette (top row, second in from the right side) over the matte navy shadow. I then blended the edges of the shimmer so that it faded into the matte mauve colour.
  6. I used that same shimmery blue colour to line the outer 2/3 of my lower lashline.
  7. I used a black gel liner to create a thin line on my upper lashline.
  8. I used a pair of strip lashes to add thickness and length to my natural lashes.
  9. I coated my bottom lashes with 3 coats of mascara.

I was really pleased with how this eye look turned out! If you like this kind of look let me know in comments. I love reading feedback from you!

glow baby glow

Hello! Hello! Hello!

I’m so excited to share this makeover with you! Recently I worked with the beautiful Krista. Not only is she a brilliant graphic designer and photographer (pssst!!! check her out), she’s a momma to be! For this makeover we aimed for a glowing complexion and overall gorgeousness.

DSC00317 DSC00322

Krista’s skin is already good to begin with and did not need much work. Her main skin concern is dryness and sensitivity. I used a primer to seal in any moisturizer and to protect her skin from the outside world. I then used a yellow-based moisturizing concealer stick on her forehead, nose, under eyes, cheeks and chin.  The yellow tones create a brightening effect and work to conceal any redness. I then used a CC cream in a shade slightly darker than Krista’s skin on the perimeter of her face. I blended everything together with a small dual fibre stippling brush to create an airbrush finish. I used a bright coral blush on the tops of the apples of her cheeks and blended the blush up her cheekbones and towards her temples. A touch of highlighter completed the skin. Krista already has amazing lips so enhancing them was simple. A touch of lipliner and a pink lipstick blended over was all I needed.

DSC00324 DSC00323

Krista usually uses purple and brown shades to bring out her green eyes. This time we used pink and brown to enhance her eyes and create a romantic look. For this look I started with an eyeshadow primer. I used a matte bronzer/contour blended into her crease to start. I then patted a matte pink shadow across the entire lid. I used a matte brown shade to softly shade in the outer 1/3 of Krista’s eyelid and to line her lower lash line. I then blended these two matte shadows together. I used a shimmery pink shadow overtop of the matte pink shade, focusing on the inner 1/2 of Krista’s eyelid. Lastly I lined her eyes with a black gel liner and blended it out with a brush. Two to three coats of black mascara finished the look.

Here’s one more picture of the finished look.

Red Red Wine

Hi everyone!

This is going to be a short and sweet post with one of the most gorgeous girls I know.
I had the opportunity to do her makeup and we opted for a natural eye with a statement red lip.

IMG_5193
Just beautiful!

For this look I used a sheer foundation to even out her skin tone.
I used a highlighting stick under her eyes, on her forehead, and down the bridge of her nose.
A beautiful peachy, pinky, bronzy blush added just the right amount of glow.
I added definition to her eyes with neutral brown shades.
I used a dark brown shadow from the same palette as a liner to define the upper and lower lash lines.
Black mascara finished off the eyes.
I sculpted her brows into tip top shape with a matte brown shadow.
To finish off the entire look I chose a dramatic deep red lipstick.

Here’s the before and after:

this one’s for the boys

With Valentine’s day coming up the beautysphere is abuzz with pink eyeshadow, pink lipstick, pink blush, pink, pink, pink. I absolutely LOVE this type of makeup! However the male species doesn’t always appreciate the art and effort that goes into a Valentine’s inspired makeup look. So for this Valentine’s day rock some boy friendly makeup.

This is a look I would rock on a first date and every date after that.

DSC00302

This look is all about subtly enhancing your features.
Shimmery pink and shimmery brown shadows enhance my hazel eye colour.
I then used a black liquid eyeliner to make my eyes appear wider and to darken my lash line.
No statement brows here!
I went for natural looking skin and slightly flushed cheeks (no contouring!)
I used a “mylipsbutbetter” sheer lip gloss, but a lip balm would be a great choice if you’re hoping for a romantic kiss!

Here is my version of a boy friendly eye look up close:
DSC00305 DSC00306

Here are some simple take-away rules to create your own “boy friendly” look:

Rule #1: Boy friendly makeup should be viewed as amped up natural beauty. Subtly emphasize your eyes and lips. A dude will never notice your flawless highlight and contour. They will notice how pretty your eyes look and how luscious your lips are.

Rule #2: Don’t put up any obstacles. While the male species is oblivious to the art of makeup, they are highly sensitive to “obvious makeup”. Red lips, fake eyelashes, sparkles, (basically all the things I love) are all viewed as obstacles by a dude. The truth is they might not want to get to close to you if they are afraid of being covered in red lipstick and sparkles.

For those who want to know here’s a
list of all the products I used:
Arbonne Makeup Primer (review coming soon!)
Clinique Stay Matte Oil Free Makeup
Benefit Fake Up Concealer
Cover FX Pressed Mineral Foundation
Tarte Amazonian Clay Bronzer in Park Avenue Princess
Clinique Blushing Blush Powder Blush in Cupid
Nars Smudge Proof Eyeshadow Base
Clinique Colour Surge Eyeshadow Duo in Strawberry Fudge
Rimmel Scandaleyes Waterproof Kohl Kajal Eyeliner in 003 Brown
Maybelline New York Master Precise Liquid Eyeliner in Black
Covergirl LashBlast Fusion Water Resistant Mascara in Black

Stila Lip Glaze in Sugar Plum

Valentine’s Day Inspired Look

Hi everyone! Valentine’s day is just around the corner. Some people call it a Hallmark Holiday while others take it as an opportunity to profess their undying love. Whether you celebrate it or not, the colours associated with Valentine’s day definitely make for a pretty #fotd.

For this look I went for a pink and purple eye look, fresh dewy skin and pretty pink lips.

vdayfullface

Don’t mind the hair, I’ll make more of an effort when I actually have to leave the house.

Skin:
1. Start with clean, well moisturized skin. Use a moisturize with SPF! See my current favourite here.
2. I applied Clinique Stay Matte foundation in 02 Alabaster with my favourite foundation brush.
3. Mix Elf Studio HD Blush in Headliner with Elf Shimmering Facial Whip in Pink Lemonade on the back of your hand. Apply to the tops of the apples of your cheeks and blend out with a duo fibre brush.
4. Powder is optional, if you have oily skin like me you’ll need a powder even if you’re going for a fresh, dewy look. For those with dry skin you can either use a translucent powder or a setting spray. I used Cover FX Pressed Mineral Foundation in G40 (formerly M40)

2014-02-04 15.01Eyes:
1. Prime the eyes with MAC Paint Pot in Bare Study
2. Sweep the light pink shade from Loreal Paris HIP Metallic Shadow Duo all across the lids. I extended mine slightly to create a V shape on the outer lid.
3. Line the upper lash line with a soft brown pencil liner.
4. Smudge out the brown liner with a smudge brush and the dark purple shadow from the Loreal eyeshadow duo.
5. Line the upper waterline with the same brown pencil
6. Curl eyelashes and apply lots of black mascara.

2014-02-04 15.03

Lips:
1. I prepped my lips with Aquaphor Healing Ointment
2. I lightly lined my lips with a nude lip liner and then blended the line in with my finger.
3. Lastly I lightly applied Too Faced lipstick in Marshmallow Bunny and blended that in with my fingers as well to achieve a very natural looking lip.
